Kenny Washington is the first Black player, in the modern era, to sign a contract in the National Football League. He played for the Los Angeles Rams.

Jackie Robinson plays his first game as a Brooklyn Dodger.

Larry Doby is the first Black player and pinch hitter in the American League for the Cleveland Indians.
